HP Caliper Version 5.6 is the latest release for HP-UX. For Linux, HP Caliper 5.2 continues to be the latest release.

New Options and Enhancements in 5.6

The HP Caliper 5.6 release has the following improvements:
  • Addition of dispersal metrics for Intel(R) Itanium(R) 9500 processors.
  • Quality improvements and bug fixes.


New Options and Enhancements in 5.5

The HP Caliper 5.5 release has the following improvements:
  • Support for Intel® Itanium® 9500 processors is added.
  • A new option --dcache-hits, is added. This option is available only on Intel® Itanium® 9500 processors. This option specifies that Caliper should measure and report dcache load hits along with misses. A corresponding config file flag, "measure_dcache_hits", has been added.
  • A new option --dcache-stores, is added. This option is available only on Intel® Itanium® 9500 processors. This option specifies that Caliper should measure and report dcache store misses. A corresponding config file flag, "measure_dcache_store", has been added.
  • A check box, "dcache hits", has been added in the Caliper GUI. This check box is enabled only on Intel® Itanium® 9500 processors. This is used for obtaining dcache load hits along with misses.
  • A new CPU metrics measurement called "replay" has been added. This measurement is available only on Intel® Itanium® 9500 processors.
  • New flags have been added in the pmu_trace config file, "collect_dcache_store" and "collect_alat_store", to measure dcache store and ALAT store events, respectively. These flags are available only on Intel® Itanium® 9500 processors.

HP Caliper 5.2 release (March 2010) is applicable to both HP-UX and Linux. HP Caliper 5.2 is improved to provide better performance analysis for enterprise and multi-tier applications.

New features in HP Caliper 5.2 include:
  • Support for the quad-core Intel® Itanium® processor 9300 series.
  • Support for simultaneous fprof sampling on multiple PMU counters. The -s or --sampling-spec option can be used multiple times to specify the list of sampling events.
  • New details added to the Blocking Primitive section of the Call Stack Profile report with thread synchronization primitive's holder and waiter thread analysis (HP-UX 11.31 only).
  • A new option, --percent-sample=threads|process, that displays thread details with the percentage data for samples collected for each thread or for a process.
  • A new cstack enhancement option, --stop-functions that lets you specify the list of kernel stop functions. This list is used to avoid unnecessary kernel unwinding.


HP Caliper on HP-UX

HP-UX 11i v2 or later is required.

Important Note:If you are using HP Caliper on HP-UX 11i v2, you will need to install kernel patch PHKL_34020. Please check the HP IT Resource Center for availability and download information for this patch. Contact the HP Caliper team if you have questions about this patch.

HP Caliper on Linux

  • HP Caliper is supported on RedHat4, Debian 3.0, and SuSE Enterprise Linux 9.
  • For noncommercial use, HP Caliper on Linux is free.
